IWSG - Time

IWSG—Writers, coming together on the first Wednesday of every month for a virtual pat on the back.

If only I could purchase time in a store. Or get it online like window blinds. I’d even purchase a lottery ticket if the prize were Time.

If I could make more Time to write, it’d be like a crocheted afghan. Or a painting. Form it into a paper airplane and keep it from flying away with every insignificant breeze.

I need Time, more hours in the twenty-four allotted to me to get done what needs to get done.

And all those little tasks vying for my attention, waiting to drain me of my Time. Fixing fence when the cattle get out, feeding the dog that begs, cleaning a toilet, answering the phone. Life keeps interfering with my teeny tiny portion of Time.

I need to find the Time to do the necessary stuff that keeps the house semi-tidy, groceries in the cupboards, bills paid, and toilet paper in the bathroom.

Exercise is important but It. Takes. Time.

Who can find Time to write a new novel when there are other literary tales that need spun. Like editing, blogging, critiquing, answering email, promotional intrigues, book reviews, and checking other blogs.

And, gee, maybe every now and then I *might* want to take the Time to read what someone else has written.

Is there a pocket of Time buried like in a coalmine? A seam of Time like silver waiting to be mined? Like a field of wheat waving its golden heads in anticipation of harvest?

How do you find the Time to write?

  1. Hi! My ISWG last month was also about trying to find time to write. Sadly I am no wiser than you about where to find some more!

    1. But you've had a whole month to discover where to find it! ARGGHHHHH. Oh well, maybe we need to look harder, :)

  2. Either need more time or a bunch of clones to get it all done!
I guess when I'm writing I just make the time. Other things just go out the window. Oddly enough, I usually don't miss them either.

  3. This is a recurrent theme this month- and that's one of the many reasons why I love this group so much. It helps to know we are not alone in our time struggles and trying to manage it all. Usually, exercise is the first thing I'm willing to forego, (along with the laundry until I am have absolutely nothing left to wear, LOL)

    1. *thumbs up* regarding housework etc.

I've got to exercise to clear the stuffin' outta my brain. Otherwise I'm useless.

  4. This seems to be a very popular topic this month. If you find that buried pocket of time I think you could make a fortune! The past few months have flown by in a blur.

  5. Very elegantly put, CD. I'm a little strange in that I'd like to stop time periodically. Happy IWSG.

    1. If only I had some of the magic my MC has, drat the luck.

  6. Time is a bit like money in that it helps to budget with it. If you work out beforehand when you're going to be writing, you're more likely to use that time for it. It also helps if you have writing methods that are easy to get to for five minutes here and there.

    1. Exactly. I need order. But then the cows get out and my morning is shot. Then the daughter comes by with the grandson and well, boy howdy, how can I resist. And so on....

  7. Yes - this! We need Hermione's Time Turner from Harry Potter. ;)

  8. I know what you mean - every hour I spend writing is like a miracle because I really struggle to avoid other time-sucking things getting in the way! I need a time-turner. Or a clone!

  9. Ugh. I can so relate to this!

I used to be pretty good at sneaking little bits in here and there, but lately, I crave long periods of uninterrupted time. Maybe I'll get some once the kids are back in school. We'll see...

    Great post! :)

    1. I ask myself the same question every day: Where did the time go? The day? The month? The summer? YIKES

  10. If I'm not careful, I can easily waste too much time. I'm actually better off with a deadline, even if it's self imposed. But yes, if we could buy time, I'd rush to the front of the line!

  11. I've never found time. I've stolen plenty, but any search of my house will not reveal enough spare time to do so much as read the newspaper. Time theft is where it's at.

  12. Find time to write? Today I won't. But I did yesterday.

  13. If you find that vein of time, I'll help you mine it. Good luck!

  14. I totally feel your pain. I'm also trying to make more time to write while keeping it balanced with everything else.

    Sigh.

Let me know if you find the Time mine. I'd like to buy some Time from you. ;-)

  15. Thanks for visiting and following my blog yesterday!

Time...? Actually, I'm quite lucky in that my 'day' job is actually an evening job, so I have all day to write while the kids are at school. However, I understand from non-writer friends that this is usually the time I should be meeting them for coffee and doing the housework!

  16. we are in sync again! so much time and so little to do! strike that, reverse it!
i wish my writing could be my number one priority, but its the carrot dangling in front of a art full of chores!

  17. Finding time can be a tricky thing. I have to do the things that are most important first thing in the morning or all bets are off.
Wake up - walk the dog. Come home from walk and plunk butt in chair for an hour. Exercise (minimal-don't judge ;) and then off into my day.
For me this works because I'm a morning person. I've been known to walk the dog at 2:00 am if that's when I wake.

I love the treadmill set up. That is pretty cool.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  18. I'd never 'find' time, I can barely find my keys. I have to schedule time for writing, putting it before cleaning and all other tasks for a set amount of time. It rises to the top of my pyramid of obligations and then, of course, it tips back to the bottom when something else gets a turn. A time store would be great. I'd buy that.

  19. I don't have the answer for you, but for me, if I take "time" to sit down and write a list of things to be done for the day or week and place writing as one of the top priorities, then I usually get'er done! But I do set aside a specific time for me to write..from 1 pm-3pm...maybe not everyday, but I feel guilty enough if I don't that I try to work on writing during those hours. I hate that guilty feeling! And it is so satisfying to cross projects off a list to see your progress on projects completed. Your post really nailed exactly how I feel too! Thank you. Best wishes!
