Songs Sunday

Music that personifies a story’s characters.
Justus has a theme song, music that defines his personality. It opens his character traits to any who want to know him, his fears and how he views himself.
He runs from many things; his legacy, the guild of wizards but especially from his own nature.
Two songs speak to his indecision and questions.
Crystal Ball by Styx. Nothing gives Justus satisfaction in his life and he wonders how it will end if the Imperium finds him.
"I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me,
Or am I even in its mind at all"
Wicked Game by Chris Isaak is, IMHO, one of the most erotic songs ever. When Sable enters his life, Love implodes his comfortable existence and brings the confrontation he fears.
"No, I don’t want to fall in love."
"What a wicked game to play, to make me feel this way."
But his theme song describes all he is.
Bad Company by Five Finger Death Punch
"Bad company, I can’t deny
Bad, bad company until the day I die."
Do your characters have a theme song or a playlist?

  1. I wish mine did but writing anything historical usually means classical or nothing at all. I'm looking forward to my sequel so I can listen to the Pixies, Opeth, and Coldplay. Oh yeah, I've already got theme songs picked out. But for now it's whatever the son is watching on the tv downstairs, the sound of the heater running, the hum of my computer, and the tap-tapping of my fingers on the keyboard.

  2. Another wonderful post! I agree with you; if you can associate a character with music you are well on your way to bringing that character to life.
PS - Stop by my blog - I've given you a blogging award. :)

  3. Cool idea, and something I've considered blogging about. I think I'll add that to my list of future posts. For now, my theme song for my manuscript that's out on submission would be Arctic Monkeys' "From the Ritz to the Rubble." That song was on auto repeat as I wrote the book, and it goes along with the content too. Perfectly in line with the tone of the book. In fact, that entire album (Whatever People Say I Am That's What I Am Not) is like the soundtrack for my book.
