New Perspective on the Fiscal Cliff

Going rogue today due to circumstances beyond my control.

Fiscal Cliff, dumbed down.

Lesson # 1:
  • U.S. Tax Revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
  • Federal Budget: $3,820,000,000,000
  • New Debt: $1,650,000,000,000
  • National Debt: $14,271,000,000,000
  • Recent Budget cuts: 38,500,000,000
Let’s now remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budge:
  • Annual family income: $21,700
  • Money the family spent: $38,200
  • New debt on the credit card: $16,500
  • Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
  • Total budget cuts so far: $385
Got it?…. OK now…
Lesson # 2
Here’s another way of looking at the Debt Ceiling:
Let’s say you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood… and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.  What do you think you should do?
Raise the ceiling or remove the shit?

  1. I think the folks running things need to be held accountable when they don't do what they were elected to do, ie, getting something done instead spew excuses and argue and blame the other side. This shouldn't be about sides. This should be about solving a problem. And if they can't do the work then they should go home, no pension, no insurance, nada. Go home and get a job like everyone else where you actually have to do something for your $.

    There. I feel better.

  2. Agree with MsHatch - screw the sides, just come to an agreement!

  4. I believe that Congress along with the administration is trying to figure out if it can declare bankruptcy so it will just all go away.

  5. Ditto what Marcy said.

Every term, these politicians have one goal in mind; their re-election. Do something! For God's sake do something.

Have some guts. Maybe you won't win the next election but damn it, fix this country's spending AND the tax situation.

Note: I said TAX not that wussy term REVENUE.

  6. LOL, I sure love the way you put all of that into a form that makes sense. If someone had done that before the election and then put everyone on the spot to answer in concrete terms what would be done, things might have started getting better.

I still hope politicians will swallow their pride and get to work. Maybe all the zeros are confusing them though?

  7. I wish we had some leaders who would get serious about removing as much of the corruption and incompetence as possible, but we keep electing those who would rather throw the baby out with the bathwater or just let the baby drown.

  8. Continuing the household analogy, bailing out massive companies is like a household with all this debt, whose friend just started a small business that went bankrupt...and instead of letting their friend be a grown-up and deal with it on their own, got themselves further mired in debt to help them out. Sounds completely retarded on a personal level, but the government officials can do it without any real consequences.
