How to Waste Time While Editing

My first draft waits. Editing is the objective today. Nine o’clock rolls around – designated for writing or my leave-me-the-hell-alone time.

I open the crit documents from two of my betas (Thanks Charity. Thanks L. Blankenship) alongside my draft and begin reading, editing, comparing, etc.

My Blackberry dings indicating I have mail.

Laura, a new follower on our crit group at UnicornBell, is responding to my comment on her blog.

How nice. I flit to her site and remember that I need to sign in to Blogger having signed out to check other accounts on Google. ( sidebar: I have three accounts and they drive me crazy)

I sign in and see something new. Google books.

I check it out. But it doesn't list one of my favorite books, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

I Google Patrick and find his website. I click on his blog. Cool blog. He mentioned the RP game, Skyrim.

I Google Skyrim.

I go to Amazon to read information on Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls, and Skyrim.

I check reviews on another site.

*coffee break and check our wood stove*

Back to computer.

I realize it is 11 pm and time to start dinner.

Wow. I got so much editing done today.

  1. Yes, that sounds like me. Although I'm not editing a book, I do get quite distracted once I sign on and many times have shut the computer down before realizing I did nothing I signed on to do. NOTHING! I think maybe we were separated at birth.

I haven't been around as much but I've been keeping up with you in google reader. Totally agreed with you on the Twilight post. I loved the series! Sometimes you just want to read something light and fun, not a critically acclaimed masterpiece, although I love many of those too. Recently got some time to myself and saw Breaking Dawn part one. Swooon...... :D Have a great day, my friend! Oh, forgot to mention I changed my bloggy name. Hi, I'm Jenn ,formerly known as "Mountain Mama." You can call me whatever you like. Just don't call me late for chocolate! ;)

Oh, and I love the wood stove reference. Used to live in a house with one of those - and I've got the burn scar lines on my forearm to prove it! LOL

  2. It's easy to do, isn't it? And I think I am getting Skyrim for Christmas...

  3. This sounds exactly like me on editing days. I'm easily distracted by shiny things, too.

  4. google, schmoogle!

the way i somewhat avoid the tantalizing distractions of blogging, is to keep them separate. i write & edit on the laptop, and blog, google, etc on my ipad =)

i started avoiding the internet on my laptop when a couple viruses broke thru =(
now it's a good system for me =)

  5. Hmmm...why did your post sound remarkably familiar. Must have been the great intentions on starting with edits then ending with...umm...well, you did get started at least.

    Yeah, waaaay too familiar.

  6. I love Skyrim. Google Skyrim Hoarders and you'll be surprised at what you find.

  7. I wish I could play Skyrim, but I don't think my computer would like it. I was, however, able to enjoy Oblivion and at one point was head of the Guild of Thieves and an expert maker of potions :)

  9. ROFL!! I do the same thing! I think it's a specialized kind of ADD that only writers can contract. Heh

Just wanted to drop in and say HAPPY HOLIDAYS! I'm so grateful we met this year, and look forward to haunting your blog more in the year to come. See you then!
